Median ROAS for Food & Beverage brands in Triple Whale's Google Ads benchmarks, Aug 2025 to Jul 2026, from more than 21,000 brands using Triple Whale across all industries. This is revenue-based ROAS, not POAS: multiply it by your own margin after returns to get POAS. The page doesn't state which attribution model it uses, and brands using one analytics vendor aren't a random sample.
POAS divides the gross profit a campaign produced by what you spent to get it. At 1.0, ad spend used up every dollar of product profit the campaign generated. Above 1.0, the campaign contributes to fixed costs and net profit; below it, each sale loses money before overhead is counted.
No published POAS benchmark for food and beverage brands is built on real account data. The figure above is the closest credible number: the median Google Ads ROAS for food and beverage brands in Triple Whale's dataset. The same dataset shows the category getting harder over the year to July 2026. Median ROAS fell 5.04%, median cost per acquisition rose 14.45% to $23.65, and median conversion rate fell 12.80% to 4.26%, while median order value rose 6.16% to $71.39. Customers cost more to win, which leaves less room for the costs ROAS doesn't see.
What moves a food brand's POAS
Fixed costs on every order
Picking, packing, a box and a shipping label change far less than the order value does between an order of one jar and an order of six. On a small basket those costs can take most of the margin. That makes basket size a big lever on food POAS, and one that ROAS can't show, as the food ROAS vs POAS gap page works through.
Cold chain and perishables
Chilled and frozen products need insulated packaging, cold packs and faster shipping, and anything that arrives spoiled has to be replaced. All of that is paid after Google Ads has recorded the sale.
Thin product margins
In Damodaran's industry data, cost of goods was 76.77% of sales across 78 US-listed food processing companies, against 65.61% for US-listed companies as a whole outside financials, and 45.26% for 27 soft-drink companies in the same table. Where your products sit in that range decides how much ROAS you need before a campaign makes money.
Repeat purchases, and gifting that looks like them
Food is bought again, but it is also bought as a gift. Recharge left food out of its 2026 comparison of subscription categories because its reorder curve "behaves oddly", with the twelfth reorder reading higher than the ninth, which Recharge calls "the fingerprint of gifting and one-time orders". Count repeat purchases from your own customers, with gift orders separated out, before you let them justify a low first-order POAS.
Turning the median ROAS into POAS
POAS equals ROAS multiplied by your margin after packing, shipping and spoilage.
Illustrative arithmetic with made-up round numbers, not a benchmark.
A campaign at a ROAS of 3.0:
- A brand keeping 30% of revenue after fulfilment makes POAS 3.0 × 0.30 = 0.9, and loses money on the first order.
- Raise the basket so fulfilment is spread over more product, and margin after fulfilment rises to 40%: POAS 3.0 × 0.40 = 1.2.
- Convert before you compare, using margin after fulfilment, not product margin.
- Look at POAS by basket size. Small orders and large orders can sit on opposite sides of 1.0 inside the same campaign.
- Below 1.0 on first orders is only acceptable if your own repeat data, gifting excluded, pays it back.
Why a benchmark is only a starting point
Your break-even line depends on your product margin, your packaging and shipping costs, and your basket sizes. Use the median to see where food accounts typically sit, then set targets from your own margin after fulfilment.
